I have better plans than God. My way would make more sense than the divine way. Oh, how I wish the Lord would consult me in matters of my life. Wow. When written like that, it seems really awful, doesn't it? Certainly none of us would want those thoughts to be spoken aloud. And, yet, how many times do I shun advice because it doesn't fit in line with my thinking? Or how often do I reject the direction God is leading me because it appears fearful, uncomfortable or just unknown?
Like many other young people, I knew better than my parents. Were you this way too? I suppose you were about 30-something when the reality of your parents' wisdom hit you like a hammer.
But, when is the reality of God's perfect wisdom going to hit us?
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to Him
and He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3: 5-6
Can we trust God in everything? Is it possible to embrace that God is good even when my reasoning would declare otherwise? We have a promise in this proverb: when we trust God fully, and not with a divided heart; when we lean into Him and not into our own understanding of the situation; when we submit/surrender/give Him every single way and idea and plan...then He will make our paths straight.
Have you noticed that when we persist in our ways that we usually face obstacles? The way is anything but smooth. Resisting God and insisting upon our reasoning is a sure way to invite confusion and frustration into the mix. Unfortunately, I know this all too well. But, I am encouraged that God would send us road blocks and other chastening methods to turn us back to Him. We do well not to persist in our own ways and to turn to Him in repentance and dependence.
We CAN trust God in everything! How blessed we are to have such a Father.
