Our refusal to hear and receive correction is stupid because it keeps us from seeing our true need for Jesus.Read More
Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Luke 6: 46
It is interesting to me to define words. I really gain a better understanding of what a word actually means if I define it. Our culture can misconstrue the meaning or even change the meaning of a word over the course of time. Take the word “awful”. In the 1300’s, it meant “full of awe”. Of course, now it has a purely negative connotation. So let’s define the word Lord. Lord is defined as someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler.
I began teaching Children's Church at my local church when I was in high school. Since then, I have spent countless hours hanging out with children. One thing I have learned by spending time with kids is that all children find security in authority. They may argue or fight someone who is over them, but in reality they all want to be protected and safe. Children love routine and enjoy knowing they don't have to make the decisions. When they understand authority and how to submit to it, they grow and blossom in their environment.
Our Authority is Jesus. He should be the power, or master of our lives. He rules which direction our lives take and we should eagerly agree with His plans and ways. Just as children must learn to obey, we need to do this as well. It isn't easy to come under authority of someone because it is actually giving up “our” rights to what we want or desire. I often tell my kids, “You just need to choose to submit to what I am telling you to do.” Willfully coming under authority is a choice we need to make and we need to make it daily. It isn't easy, but it is important to recognize the Lord's authority. For some reason, just like small children, we often choose to buck the authority over us, even though God's plan is perfect for our good and His glory.
Are you living your life as if you are serving the Lord in all your ways? Are you listening to His directions by reading His words daily? Are you spending time praying daily to our Lord and Master? Is there anywhere in your life that you are “bucking” the authority of Jesus our Lord? Give this to Him now. If we love Jesus, we will obey Him (John 14: 15) and there will be great freedom and joy in our lives because of that.
