Re: flect-Ing on Jesus as the Champion

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne.  H Hebrews 12:2

Fear was knocking at the door of my heart.  Knocking hard just like the vacuum cleaner salesman knocked a few years after I had moved into the city. This rural farm girl had never experienced pushy salesmen.  Somehow, this man made his way into my living room with his vacuum even though I repeated that I only have two area rugs and one small room with carpet. He found reason after reason why I needed this sweeper.  I could vacuum my hardwood, the few carpet areas, cloth-covered chairs, my couch, my bed – yes, even my bed!  He continued to push and push until I forcefully had to tell him to leave.

Well, fear was knocking on my door of my heart and pushed itself right in to my mind just like that salesman. I began to fear those “What ifs?”

What if this happens?

What if this doesn’t happen?

What if I can’t control that happening?

What if I don’t know what to do?

Even though, these are probably fairly common questions we ask ourselves, they show a window into our heart and they show a lack of trust in God.

I shared my “fear” with two friends. This was hard yet I knew fear was sin.  Instead of giving 'pat’ answers like “You have a right to be fearful!” or  “Wow, why is this happening to you?” they both quietly spoke words of life to my heart.  Both women separately exhorted a simple concept: “Trust in God!”

When we fear, we are focused in the wrong direction.  We are focused on ourselves, our situation or the unknown.  But if we focus on Christ, we focus on His power over the world, His perfect wisdom, His presence to carry us through any situation and His sovereignty over all challenges.

You see, Jesus is our Champion!  He fights our battle against fear and all sins.. and guess what?  He has already WON!

A champion is a fighter, an advocate or defender or one that battles for another.  Jesus fought a hard battle on our behalf at the cross. He took our sin upon Himself and the condemnation we deserved.  He did this obediently and with joy knowing that He would win.  He is the Champion!

My two friends exemplified Christ by being a champion to me.  They spoke truth to my fearful heart and pointed me towards the true Champion – Jesus Christ.  Who are you pointing toward Christ?

Love, Julie
